Mid-century modern design combines elements like bold colors, natural woods, organic shapes, clean lines, and tapered furniture legs. Mid-century spaces were more comfortable and less formal than designs of the past, and encouraged lounging, relaxation, and conversation. The style also incorporates patterns including geometric and organic designs.
If you’re just getting started with bringing mid-century design into your home, adding a few statement pieces is a great place to begin. Mid-Century Modern Sofas on Amazon
Now I love the lines of mid-century sofas, but this is an piece where I say it’s absolutely OK to go with a comfier modern replica! The company Joybird ushered in a trend of inexpensive, comfortable mid-century inspired seating, and many similar styles are now available from other retailers. Check out these mid-century modern sofa picks from Amazon that have great reviews and free delivery.
Mid-Century Modern Lounge Chairs Available on Amazon
The gold standard of MCM furniture is the Eames Lounge Chair, which is still produced by its original manufacturer, Herman Miller. But what if you don’t have $6,000-7,000 or more to spend, or if you haven’t yet found a vintage reproduction version by Plycraft or Selig? Your eye might be turning to a modern reproduction! If you’ve ever sunk into the comfort of a real Eames chair, you’ve probably considered selling your car to afford one (or a kidney – no, just me?) but the version below is Amazon’s top rated version, at a fraction of the price.
Other classic armchair designs from the mid-century era featured slat-back chairs with upholstered cushions. This armchair below is inspired by the iconic “Z” lounge chair by Poul Jensen for Selig.
Mid-Century Modern Coffee Tables on Amazon
Coffee tables get a lot of use (and abuse – hello, spills and feet), so this could be another piece you prefer to buy as a modern reproduction. This wood and glass table below is a replica of an original created by designer Isamu Noguchi and produced by Herman Miller starting in in 1948. It’s long been seen as emblematic of the mid-century design esthetic: the perfect blend of form and function, both beautiful and practical. The second table below is smaller, and reminiscent of surfboard-shaped coffee tables popular from the era.
MCM Credenzas/Consoles Available on Amazon
A mid-century inspired credenza can be a great focal point for your room, either as a home for your television or a sideboard in your dining area. I use an MCM dresser as a TV base, but it doesn’t have open shelving for other electronics equipment. These pieces below capture the look of mid-century style with dark wood, angled legs, and clean lines. But they are also fitted for modern electronics. *One thing to note: look for sturdy legs/connectors on furniture of this type and note the weight limit of each piece.
Amazon Mid-Century Modern Floor Lamps
Lighting is an important element of any MCM space. Many homes of the era lacked overhead lighting in some rooms, instead opting for lamps to provide a warmer, relaxed ambience. These floor lamps below capture the feeling of the mid-century era but are still perfect for today’s spaces.
Mid-Century Modern Ceiling Lights from Amazon
A feature chandelier in your dining room or entry is a fab way to give your mid-century space some oomph. I am always a fan of a sputnik lamp, although a simple and understated globe lamp or Nelson lamp can also be good against a busy background like a gallery wall. The first “sputniky” light below is very similar to one available at West Elm.
Pro tips: If your ceiling is sloped, keep in mind that you’ll need a lamp on a chain or with a part at the ceiling that pivots. Lights on chains also allow you to swag a lamp from an off-center fixture. Be sure to buy frosted bulbs if your sputnik fixture hangs low so you don’t blind dinner guests, and did you know there are special bulbs that don’t buzz when dimmed? (I didn’t!)
MCM Dining Furniture Available on Amazon
If you’re looking to upgrade your dining space with mid-century furniture, originals can add up – especially depending on how many chairs you need! Vintage styles also seem rather small today, but even reproductions are still sized well for apartment living. A tulip pedestal table and chairs, originally designed by Eero Saarinen, is a classic option and reproductions are available on Amazon. Versions below of Hans Wegner’s iconic “Wishbone” chairs come in several colors, and a sleek wood finish dining table is perfect with them.
Pro tip: I also like mismatched mid-century dining chairs and tables – just measure to be sure the chairs will fit underneath. I once considered buying one of every chair I liked, because I couldn’t decide on a set!
Amazon Mid-Century Style Rugs
Rugs can be a great way to add the colors, natural textures, and geometric patterns popular in the mid-century era and pull all the elements of your room together. Be sure to add some pillows in the same colors too!
Pro tips: To avoid the dreaded “too small rug” debacle, be sure to measure and plan your space. Generally, living room rugs are at least 8×10, and at least the front legs of your furniture should rest on the rug. Grab more rug size tips here.
MCM Beds Available on Amazon
Clean lines and minimalist designs make mid-century furniture perfect for a soothing bedroom space. Also, if you’re just getting started with MCM, it’s easy to try the style in one room without having to worry about matching adjoining spaces. Check out these beds below with the signature mid-century tapered legs, natural materials, and simple lines.
Amazon Mid-Century Modern Benches
Benches were another staple of mid-century design. Find a spot for one in your entry, at the foot of a bed, or even used as a coffee table. MCM benches were found in slatted wood, leather, and upholstered designs. These finds below available on Amazon are perfect for your MCM spaces.
